Pre-Course Instructions and Entry Requirements

All delegates must hold a current MATS Basic Climbing & Rescue/Renewal certificate or equivalent.

All delegates must be able to certify that they are physically fit and have no medical conditions that might prevent them working at height. (A list of conditions that could affect practical training and work at height are available on request.) SpanSet reserves the right to exclude unsuitable delegates from training courses. Delegates must be 18 years or over.

Overview

For telecoms engineers, lifting & rigging loads on infrastructure such as towers & masts can be a daily activity, involving operations at height. SpanSet’s two day MBNL rigging course has been designed to give new & existing telecoms engineers the necessary practical skills & knowledge to safely conduct lifting & rigging of loads such as, a range of microwave antennas, PCN sectors and associated steelwork whilst working at height.

Full Course Details

Day 1

Theory - The following topics will be covered:

  • All legislation appropriate to conducting lifting activities – Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, LOLER 1998, PUWER and LEEA code of practice.
  • Planning of a lifting operation including assessing the load, correct equipment selection and assessing the environment.
  • Safe and correct use of common lifting accessories (slings, shackles, chain slings, wire rope slings, plate clamps, eyebolts, hooks).
  • Pre use inspection of common lifting accessories.

Practical - The following topics will be covered:

  • Assessment of loads incorporating weight, centre of gravity and any safety hazards.
  • Practical pre use inspection of equipment.
  • Practical selection and use of suitable common lifting accessories (slings, shackles, chain slings, wire rope slings, plate clamps, eyebolts, hooks).
  • Personal safety whilst lifting.
  • Potential misuse of equipment.
  • Completing a lifting plan.

 

Day 2 - The following topics will be covered:

  • Risk Assessment Overview of lifting activates & location.
  • Communication ground level and at height.
  • Managing Exclusion/ Drop Zones.
  • Selection of equipment for Lifting and Work at Height.
  • Strengths and characteristics of equipment.
  • Planning and execution of lifting tasks at height.
  • Tool Tethering.
  • Equipment control and pre-use checks.
  • Basic knots.
  • Hauling lines, Pilot Lines and Braking Systems.
  • Pulleys.
  • Z Rigs and mechanical advantage.
  • Safe Lifting Kits.
  • All delegates will plan and execute a lifting task, including rigging of equipment at height.

Assessment – Formative & Summative assessments will be conducted during the training course through verbal questioning, practical observations & written assessment papers. For additional learning needs, please contact training administration for the SpanSet reasonable adjustments policy.

Accreditations On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a SpanSet accredited certificate & ID card. This will be valid for 3 years.
